Issue
AMR’s client was a mid-cap private equity investor. Partly due to the poor deal flow caused by the financial crisis the client aimed at proactively identifying attractive investment opportunities.
Approach
In a first step, AMR analysed meta-trends, such as ageing of the population or climate change, and their impact on various industry sectors. In a second step, AMR investigated these positively influenced sectors to assess their overall attractiveness, e.g. in terms of average profitability or a sufficient number of medium-sized acquisition targets. In a next step, AMR identified attractive companies applying a set of criteria, e.g. minimum size or successful strategic positioning. In addition, the selected companies should have a principal need for equity, e.g. planned expansion or an upcoming need for a succession plan.
Recommendations
AMR provided a prioritised short-list of more than 20 principally attractive acquisition targets across various industry sectors. Due to the systematic selection process it was possible to expand the short-list again if needed.
Result
Our client was in a position to immediately contact attractive acquisition targets on an exclusive base. Beyond that, AMR delivered detailed information on 12 industry sectors which was also helpful for other investment activities.
Insight from AMR’s research
The systematic, trend-based approach led to the identification of industry sectors that are likely to benefit fundamentally from major, long-term trends. The subsequent systematic sector analysis checked all stages of the industry value chain for attractive acquisition targets.
